WELCOME TO BUDVA!! Budva is believed to be one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic. According to the legend it was founded by Cadmus, a Phoenician hero, son of the king Agenon, who after being banished from Thebes found here a refuge for him and his wife. There are numerous archaeological findings which provide historical references dating back to the 5th century BC. Also the theories about its origin are various. According to one, it was originally an island which with time became part of the mainland. It was supposedly discovered by a Greek sailor Boutua and eventually came under Roman domination which greatly influenced this territory and left numerous traces.
What we can see today of Budva’s Old Town mainly dates back to the period of Venetian rule that lasted for almost 400 years. Everywhere is visible the recognizable Venetian style. In this period the defense walls were built to protect Old Town against the Ottoman invasions and these are preserved till the present time. Erasing right beside the sea they offer a stunning view and together with the city gates and towers today represent one of the Budva must-sees. Other magnificent monuments in the very city core are the St. John’s church from the 7th century, St. Mary’s of Punta church from 840 and the Holy Trinity church constructed in 1804. Especially charming are Budva little squares and narrow alleys which hide many secrets and attractions designated to those of you who are a bit more determined to discover them. Believe us, it’s worth to roam these little streets, you’ll find colorful local restaurants, hidden wine shops, enchanting galleries and miniature coffee bars. If tired of touring around the town, luckily there are many gorgeous sandy beaches where you can spend a lazy afternoon. One of the most beautiful one is Mogren, settled between some spectacular cliffs. But there are many others within the city limits and in surrounding tourist villages and exclusive resorts, such as Sveti Stefan, often visited by celebrities. Of course, you shouldn’t miss Budva night life either – it’s one of the most vivid on the entire Adriatic coast and attracts especially young people from all over Europe. In fact, in the night the whole Old Town seems one big open-air club, so the fun here is guaranteed.
