Offical name of this densly populated country is the Republic of Malta. Malta is an island nation, comprised of larger islands Malta, Gozo and Comino and other, smaller and uninhabited islands. Malta is situated centrally in the Mediterranean Sea, so the island enjoys Mediterranean climate. This position has given the country a strategic importance and because of that many have longed to rule the islands of Malta. In 1964 Malta gained independence from the United Kingdom, but even today English remains country's official language along with Maltese.
The capital of Malta is Valletta. But the biggest city of this island country is Birkirkara.
Valletta is the Baroque, fortified city, built on the rocky Sceberras Peninsula, on Malta’s north-east coast. The city of Valletta is surrounded on three sides by two of the most beautiful natural harbours in Europe, the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett harbour. You should not miss the panoramic views of the harbour from the Upper Barracca Gardens. You should also explore the ancient fortifications and wander through the narrow city streets where you can see statues and fountains as well as splendid Baroque architecture.
Valletta was one of the earliest sites inscribed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
The entire Maltese Archipelago is served by the only airport in Malta – Malta International Airport. It is located on the island of Malta between Luqa and Gudja. The locals still refer to the airport as Luqa Airport or Valletta airport, since it is located 5 kilometers southwest of the Maltese capital. Having in mind the distance between Malta International Airport and Valletta transportation from airport to the capital should not be a problem. But anyhow it would be advisable to book a taxi or hire airport limousine service or chauffeur service.
The safest way to get around Valletta as well as to get around the entire island is by bus. The main bus station for the island of Malta is located in front of the main gate of Valletta. All the bus lines spread out from here and return to here. Buses offer a cheap transfer all over the island of Malta (the same is true for the island of Gozo). Interesting fact is that the traffic in Malta drives on the left, as in United Kingdom.
Once you visit Malta, you should try Maltese cuisine which is typically Mediterranean. Maltese cuisine comes as a result of a long relationship between the foreigners who dominated Malta and the people of Malta.
Influences from outside continue to arrive on the island.
The Maltese Islands are a feast for the senses. The islands offer an exhilarating contrast of colours which you will surely enjoy, as well as everything else related to these beautiful islands. Everywhere you go, unique historic sites and beautiful nature will follow you.
