The territory of this interesting central Balkan country covers the southern part of the Pannonian Plain. Official name of Serbia is the Republic of Serbia. It borders Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo.
Serbia's position is quite interesting; it is situated at the crossroads between Central, Southern and Eastern Europe. Because of this Serbia is often described as the crossroads between the East and the West. Although Serbia is a landlocked country, there are over 2000 kilometers of navigable rivers and canals. Also, a lot of Serbia's territory is covered by forests.
The official language in Serbia is Serbian, and the official script is Cyrillic but you should know that Latin script is also used.
Serbia's capital is the beautiful city of Belgrade with a population of around 1.6 million people. The development of this city, so typical of South-Eastern Europe, has been influenced by the Sava as well as the Danube River. Belgrade is one of the oldest European cities. Throughout the history Belgrade has been an important focal point for traffic. Belgrade is not only Serbia's political centre, it is also centre of culture, education, science and economy. Streets, parks, monuments and archaeological sites are just some of Belgrade's tourist attractions. The capital of Serbia is served by Belgrade Nikola Tesla International Airport. Airport is located 12 kilometers west of the city centre. In order to reach the city centre, you can always consider booking a taxi. Anyway you should think about your transfer from Belgrade airport to the city centre. You can hire airport limousine or chauffeur service if you prefer them over regular shuttles from airport. Belgrade’s public transport system is mainly based on bus lines and it is quite effective when it comes to transfer within the city limits, but also when it comes to transfer from Belgrade to other cities of the region ( Budapest, Zagreb…).
But Belgrade is not the only interesting town in Serbia. Novi Sad is Serbia’s second largest city. Nowadays it is not only popular for being the centre of culture, but it is also quite attractive to young tourists because of the EXIT festival. EXIT festival is the biggest festival in region that lasts for four days and hosts numerous artists. Unfortunately, Novi Sad is not served by an airport. In fact the nearest airport is Nikola Tesla International Airport. But Novi Sad is very well served by bus lines. Booking a taxi would also be a good idea when it comes to transportation from the city centre to other destinations.
Serbia is a welcoming and safe place to visit. You will surely enjoy the country’s capital which is a gritty, energetic city; but the other parts of this country will not leave you indifferent either.
