With population of over three million people, Madrid is Spain's capital. It is situated close to the geographical centre of the country, and because of its position the city endures cold winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
Three internationally famous art galleries, a royal palace, grand public squares are just some of Madrid’s attractions. The most important museum is certainly The Museo del Prado which has important collections by Velázques and Goya, ranging from 12th to 19th centuries. Other important museums are Thyssen-Bornemisza which has major works by Titian, Rubens, Goya, Van Gogh and Picasso and The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia which is a museum of 20th-century art. The most important exhibit of this museum is certainly Picasso’s Guernica that depicts the horrors of the Civil War.
Other important sights are The Plaza Mayor, old square previously used for bullfights, trials and executions and The Palacio Real, the royal palace that dominates the Old Madrid.
Madrid’s social life is centered in cafés, bars and summer terraces and these places are ideal to relax and experience Madrid’s social life.
As far as the entertainment is concerned, the most visited happenings are May’s Fiesta de San Isidro, Madrid’s patron saint festival, and Festival de Otoño,a music, theatre and dance festival.
Other happenings worth visiting are bullfights and flamenco performances. The Plaza de Toros de las Ventas is the most important ring in the world where corridas are held every Sunday from March to October. The so-called tablaos are flamenco venues that offer drinks and dinner with the show. There are also many flamenco bars that are a fun way of experiencing flamenco.
Madrid is very proud of its football team Real Madrid whose home stadium Santiago Bernabéu has a capacity of 80,000. If you want to visit the stadium, you can do it everyday when guided tours are conducted.
You can also do quite good shopping in Madrid. It is a paradise for gourmet food shopping. Extra-virgin olive oil, Spanish hams and cheeses make ideal gifts.
As far as the transportation in Madrid is concerned, we should mention Madrid airport- Barajas International Airport which handles more than 50 million passengers every year. But Madrid’s inhabitants mostly use Madrid Metro and taxi service.
As far as the accommodation goes, you can spend your time in Madrid in some of the most luxurious hotels of the world.
