Republic of Turkey stretches across the Anatolian peninsula which is part of Western Asia and Thrace in the Balkan region which makes part of southeastern Europe. This Eurasian country is bordered by eight other countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan , Iran, Iraq and Syria. Turkey is a transcontinental country since the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish Straits (the Bosphorus and the Dardanells) separate Anatolia and Thrace and therefore separate Asia and Europe.
Thanks to its position Turkey has had an important strategic significance throughout the centuries. Turkey is the direct successor state of the Ottoman Empire that fought battles that shaped the world. This is the place where Alexander the Great slashed the Gordian Knot, and also the place where Achilles battled the Trojans. So, it can be said that the landscape of Turkey is still dotted with battlegrounds, ruined castles and the palaces of great empires.
Turkey offers numerous sites to tourists. Especially attractive is Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. Here you can see the largest covered market in the world, the Grand Bazaar which has over 4,000 shops on 65 streets. In the Old City of Istanbul you can see the Topkapi Palace which used to be the centre of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years. The palace used to be home to 40,000 people. But the trademarks of the city of Istanbul are definitely the Blue Mosque and Hagia Spohia. The Blue Mosque overlooks the Sea of Marmara, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus; and the silhouette of the Blue Mosque with its six minarets dominates the skyline of the old city.
Hagia Sophia or the Church of Holy Wisdom is one of the largest enclosed spaces in the world and an astonishing architectural feat. You should know that the eighteenth-century fountain, the tombs of the sultans and the alabaster urns from Pergamon are just some of the things worth seeing.
Istanbul is served by two airports. Atatürk International Airport is the Istanbul’s main airport and it is located on the European side of the city. It is one of the largest international hubs in the region. How far is it from the city centre? Atatürk International Airport is located some 24 kilometers outside the city centre. You can hire services such as airport limousine service, chauffeur service or you can book a taxi in order to reach the city centre. The smaller airport is the one located on the Asian side, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport which is located some 20 kilometers east of the Asian side of Istanbul. There are shuttles from both airports, but it would be advisable to think about other services that offer transfer from airport to the city centre. Istanbul offers many possibilities of transportation, so you will probably find cheap transfer if you want to save some money.
Once you visit Turkey, do not miss Troy, Mt Ararat, Karapinar Crater Lakes,Cappadocia, Ephesus and other beautiful sites of Turkey. This unique country is definitely worth seeing.
