Official name of this country is the Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia is located in South-eastern Europe, or more precisely in the central Balkan Peninsula. Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The interesting thing to mention about Macedonia is that it became a member of the United Nations in 1993. But the country was admitted under the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia because of the dispute with Greece over the name of Macedonia.
Macedonia borders Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. This small country has more than 50 lakes and there are no less than 16 mountains higher than 2, 000 meters.
The capital of Macedonia is Skopje. In 1963 an earthquake nearly flattened the town, killing over 1, 000 inhabitants and destroying their homes. But some of the city’s most interesting sites, such as the Old Bazaar and the ancient churches and mosques of the old town, did not suffer significant damage. So, when you decide to visit Skopje, you will surely enjoy the city’s sites.
Skopje is served by Skopje Alexander the Great Airport which is currently being modernized. Skopje airport is located 22 kilometers east of Skopje. 2 kilometers east of the city is located Skopje’s main bus station. If you want to know how to get to Skopje, you should know that the whole city is connected via bus lines. Taxis also connect different parts of the city, and taxis also run frequently between the city of Skopje and the airport. The good idea would be to book a taxi in advance if you prefer taxis over shuttles from airport.
Although, Skopje is a picturesque city, one of the most beautiful towns in Macedonia is probably Ohrid. Ohrid is located on the shores of the Lake Ohrid. The town of Ohrid is served by an international airport - St Paul the Apostle. The airport is around 7 kilometers away from the centre of Ohrid. And you should know that the most airlines operate during the summer only. But you can get to Ohrid also by bus. There is a regular bus service from Bitola and Skopje. The bus from Skopje is the easiest way. The ride by the bus takes about 3 and half hours.
As far as the accommodation is concerned, Ohrid is the most expensive place to stay since it is a national tourist attraction. But, in Ohrid as well as in the rest of the country, private accommodation is always a good choice.
When speaking with Macedonians, it is advisable to refer to the country as the Republic of Macedonia and not the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Also, be very careful when talking about politics. Otherwise, Macedonians are very friendly, and you will enjoy spending time with these outgoing people. You will also enjoy Macedonian cuisine which revolves around grills.
Do not miss to visit this beautiful and picturesque country.
